Divided into eight schools with a 14:1 student-faculty ratio, Johnson University offers Christian liberal arts education in-person or on Sakai for five associate, 29 bachelor’s, and 11 graduate majors. For example, the Mass Communication AA follows a 66-credit, SACS-accredited track in Knoxville or Kissimmee to entry-level media employment.

Chaired by Dr. Linda Whitmer, the 120-credit Middle Eastern Studies BA trains Arabic speakers for missionary work sharing His Word. Wholly online, the Nonprofit Administration BS builds atop the Arts & Sciences Core with courses like Fundraising Development and 250 internship hours.

The Educational Technology MA delivers a hybrid online 36-credit curriculum with two-week summer sessions and a People’s Republic of China trip for ASCI certification. Directed by Dr. Daniel Overdorf, the 34-credit Master of Strategic Ministry provides nine ExtendedEd concentrations, such as Pastoral Care, Special Needs, Worship, Sports Management, and Children & Family, before the Real Life Christian Church apprenticeship.

About Johnson University

Johnson University originated in 1893 when author Dr. Ashley S. Johnson founded the School of the Evangelists for 42 Christian men at his 175-acre South Knox County farmstead. In 1909, America’s second-oldest Bible school was renamed the Johnson Bible College in his honor. During Dr. Robert Monroe Bell’s 27-year tenure, Johnson became coeducational in 1941, built Myrtle Hall in 1951, and dedicated Glass Memorial Library in 1965. Ten years later, it formed the Central Florida Bible College in Orlando. Accredited in November 1985, Johnson created graduate degrees and distance learning options by 2007. Bestowed the 2010 Knox Heritage Greystone Award, Johnson University adopted its current name on July 1, 2011. Endowed for $123.7 million, JohnsonU now enrolls 1,153 Royals from 17 nations in Knoxville, Kissimmee, Orlando, Indianapolis, and Phoenix or online. Johnson University Accreditation Details

On March 14, 2016, Johnson University presented a Quality Enhancement Plan to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) for retaining system-wide Level V accreditation through 2026 under its seventh president, Dr. Tommy Smith, a TICUA Pressnell Fellow. Headquartered 202 miles south via Route 411 in Decatur, this 11-state Appalachian Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to certify Federal Title-IV eligibility. Particularly, the School of Bible & Theology has been accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) since 1970. The School of Education has approval from the Tennessee State Board of Education and Florida Department of Education. On July 7, 2016, the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) also accredited Johnson’s Master of Arts.

Johnson University Application Requirements

Joining Johnson University is deemed “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s although 242 of the 247 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for high 98 percent acceptance. First-year Royals must finish state-approved high schools or homeschooling programs. Only non-graduates with four minimum GED section scores of 150 are eligible. Meeting the cumulative 2.5 GPA is preferred, but 3.06 is the average. Freshmen should exceed an 18 ACT score or its equivalent. The Teacher Education BA mandates a minimum 21 ACT and 1060 SAT mark. Online or Adult Evening programs seek transfers with 2.0 GPAs or better at accredited colleges. The Ministry Leadership BS accepts 37 core and 20 elective credits transferred for example. Graduate School entrants clearly need a four-year bachelor’s education and 2.75 GPA or higher. The Counseling MA stipulates 18 psychology prerequisites or life experience credit. Holistic Education MA students must pass the Praxis II after bachelor’s prep at the Templar School of Education. Advanced Education Specialist (Ed.S.) candidates also need 30+ master’s credits, valid Tennessee certification, and 36 months of classroom experience.

Johnson University enforces undergrad admission deadlines of June 1st for Fall, November 1st for Spring, and March 15th for Summer starts. For financial aid, the priority date is April 1st. The Graduate School has wide-ranging application cutoffs, however. For instance, the Educational Technology MA admits until May 1st, July 1st, and November 1st yearly. Master of Strategic Ministry cohorts have until April 1st while Holistic Education MA entrants must apply by March 20th.

Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2018-19, Johnson University is billing traditional Tennessee undergrads $7,440 per term or $14,880 annually full-time. General bachelor’s fees cost $1,400 each year. Living at the Knoxville campus’ dorms like Bell Hall adds $6,350 for room and board. JohnsonU budgets $800 for textbooks and $2,510 for miscellaneous needs yearly. Annual study equals $25,048 on-site and $21,190 with parents. Undergrad ExtendedEd tuition is currently $400 per credit in Indianapolis, Orlando, or Phoenix and online. For instance, the Pastoral Care and Counseling BS would total $27,555 with the $630 technology fee included. The Graduate School typically charges $425 per credit. Exceptions include $525 for the Master of Strategic Ministry, $575 for the Master of Business Administration, and $600 for the Leadership Studies Ph.D. The Christian Ministries Certificate has a one-time $2,000 fee covering tuition.
